At my dojang (TKD) and dojo (Shotokan) you start with a white belt. The first official form/kata starts at tagged white belt. Four directional punch 1 and 2 And Kihon kata don't count.

I started as a no belt and still am (im only at my 5th class) and yesterday was the first time I saw an exam and saw a special case of a white belt jumping belt to the orange belt. A very interesting thing to watch I don't know how I'm gonna handle people looking at me but kinda exited to see it.

White belt doesn't have to have test. It's very beginning.

In 45 years of involvement in martial arts I've never heard of having to earn a white belt in any system. In ITF and WTF taekwondo (the main styles) you start with a white belt beginner 10th kup and your first grading will be to 9th kup white belt with a yellow stripe. The idea behind all of the belts is that you never really stop learning, which is what I tell all my students. A black belt is a white belt who persevered and never gave up.

pretty sure in judo and jiu jitsu u get ur white belt immediatly since there wouldnt be any other way to tie ur gi

not trying to be a negative nancy but your school is failing you guys. your kicks are sloppy in this video due to balance. Im not saying you suck or anything because its a skill people need to learn however as a child I would have destroyed you on form without trying and IMO adults should be at a higher standard.

I never knew that u had to TEST to get your WHITE belt?! At my dojo, after the first or second class (I don’t remember) we got our white belts at the end of the class. Then we would help the instructor bow out of class then everyone in the class would shake your hand and say “welcome to the dojo” or “welcome to the team” I said the second one a lot. Then we would get a picture with the instructor😀

Each dojang has their own curriculum and belt ranking system. Some doing it for the bucks, some are doing it for quality and worthiness. you don't pay for the white belt test.

Wait I have to test for white belt. When I started tkd, I got my white belt with my uniform. I joined tkd 2 years ago

In grappling (Sambo, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu) we get our belts based on performance (not time) and tournament competitions, as these are going to help us to defend ourselves from real street fights.
